Open in the interactive reader →And it came to pass that the days of the feasting had gone around, and Job would send and would sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer up burnt offerings, the number of them all, for Job said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did all the days.
And YHWH said to Satan, “Behold, all that [is] unto him [is] in your hand; only against him do not stretch out your hand.” And Satan went out from the face of YHWH.
and he said, “Naked I came forth from the womb of my mother, and naked I shall return there. YHWH gave, and YHWH has taken away. Let the name of YHWH be blessed.”
In all this Job did not sin, and he did not ascribe foolishness to God.
And YHWH said to Satan, “Behold, he [is] in your hand, yet his life you must spare.”
Is not your fear your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope?
For man is born into toil, and as the sons of the flame soar to fly.
So [are] the paths of all those forgetting God; and the hope of the godless will perish,
for whom his confidence shall be cut off, and his trust the house of a spider.
“Truly I know that [it is] so. But how can a man be righteous with God?
If one was delighted to contend with Him, he could not answer Him one [time] out of a thousand.
If I were righteous, my own mouth would declare me wicked; if I were blameless, then it would declare me perverse.
For [He is] not a man like I [am], [that] I may answer Him, that we would come together into judgment.
There is not a mediator between us, to lay his hand upon the two of us,
Can you find out the searching of God? Or can you find out unto the limit of Shaddai?
The heights of the heavens—what can you do? [They are] deeper than Sheol—what can you know?
Longer than the earth [is] its measure, and wider than the sea.
Will you⁺ speak injustice for God, and will you⁺ speak deceit for Him?
Will you⁺ lift His face, or will you⁺ contend for God?
Who will bring clean from unclean? Not one!
What [is] man that he should be pure, or that he should be righteous, one born of woman?
For the company of the godless [is] barren, and fire will consume the tents of bribery.
And after they strike off my skin thus, yet in my flesh I will see God.
[He] whom I will see for myself, indeed my eyes will see, and not a stranger. My kidneys yearn in my bosom!
For he has crushed [and] forsaken the poor; he has seized a house, and he did not build it.
And they said to God, ‘Turn away from us! For we do not delight to know Your ways.
What [is] Shaddai that we should serve Him? And what do we gain that we should meet with Him?’
“Can a man be useful to God? Can even a wise one benefit Him?
Is it pleasure to Shaddai that you are righteous, or gain that you perfect your ways?
By His breath the heavens were made clear; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent.
Behold, these are the edges of His ways, and how faint of a word do we hear of Him! And the thundering of His might, who can understand?”
Far be it from me that I justify you⁺; until I die, I will not turn aside my integrity from me.
My righteousness I hold fast, and I will not let go; my heart shall not reproach [me] in my days.
because I rescued the poor crying out, and the fatherless, and no one was helping him.
The blessing of the one perishing came upon me, and the heart of the widow I caused to sing.
I clothed myself with righteousness, and it clothed me; like a robe and a turban [was] my justice.
I was eyes to the blind, and I [was] feet to the lame.
I [was] a father to the poor, and the case I did not know, I searched it out.
And I broke the fangs of the unjust, and I cast away the prey from his teeth.
“I have made A covenant with my eyes; and how could I gaze upon a virgin?
If I have rejected the justice of my manservant or my maidservant, in their dispute with me,
then what shall I do when God arises? And when He inspects, how shall I answer him?
if I have seen one perishing from lack of clothing, or there [being] no covering for the needy,
if his loins have not blessed me for warming him by the fleece of my sheep,
If I have rejoiced in the destruction of one hating me, or raised myself up because evil found him—
I said, “Days shall speak, and a multitude of years shall make known wisdom.’
Not [only] the great [in years] [are] wise, nor do [only] the aged understand justice.
The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of Shaddai gives me life.
[In] a moment they die, and in the middle of the night the people are shaken and pass away; and the mighty are taken away, not by a hand.
If you are righteous, what do you give to Him? Or what does He receive from your hand?
Your wickedness [is] to a man such as you, and your righteousness to a son of man.
teaching us more than the beasts of the earth, and making us wiser than the birds of the heavens?’
Take heed not to turn to iniquity, for upon this you have been chosen by affliction.
Remember that you should magnify His work, of which men have sung.
and I said, ‘Up to here you may come, and you shall not go further; and here shall be set the pride of your waves’?
