Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the One according to His great mercy having begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ out from the dead,
into an inheritance imperishable and undefiled and unfading, being kept in the heavens for you⁺,
who [are] being guarded in the power of God through faith for the salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
receiving the outcome of your⁺ faith, the salvation of [your] souls.
Concerning this salvation the prophets sought out and searched out, those having prophesied concerning the grace unto you⁺,
searching into what or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ in them was making evident, testifying beforehand unto the sufferings of Christ and the glories after these,
to whom it was revealed that they were ministering not to themselves but to you⁺ in these things, which now were proclaimed to you⁺ through those having proclaimed the gospel to you⁺ in the Holy Spirit having been sent from heaven, into which angels long to look.
as children of obedience, not being conformed to the passions in your⁺ former ignorance.
But according as the One having called you⁺ [is] holy, be holy yourselves also in all [your] conduct,
because it has been written: “You⁺ shall be holy, because I am holy.”
And if you⁺ call on [as] Father the One judging impartially according to the work of each, conduct yourselves in fear in the time of your⁺ sojourn,
knowing that were you⁺ redeemed from your⁺ futile conduct handed down from [your] fathers, not with perishable things—with silver or with gold—
but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless,
having been foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but having been made manifest in the last times on account of you⁺,
having been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, by the word of God, living and abiding,
because, “All flesh [is] like grass, and all the glory of it like a flower of grass. The grass withered, and the flower fell off,
but the word of the Lord remains to the age.” And this is the word having been proclaimed [as] good news to you⁺.
Therefore, having put off all malice and all deceit and hypocrisies and envies and all evil-speakings,
like newborn babies, long for the reasonable, unspoiled milk, so that in it you⁺ may grow up into salvation,
you yourselves also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house into a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Therefore it is contained in Scripture: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen [and] precious cornerstone; and the one believing on Him shall never be put to shame.”
Therefore the preciousness [is] to you⁺ who [are] believing. But [to] [those] disbelieving, “The stone that those building rejected, this became into the head of the corner,”
and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.” [They] stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed.
But you⁺ [are] a chosen kindred, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for [His] possession, so that you⁺ may proclaim the excellencies of the One having called you⁺ out of darkness into His marvelous light,
who once [were] not a people, but now [are] the people of God—those not having received mercy, but now having received mercy.
Beloved, I exhort [you], as foreigners and sojourners, to abstain from fleshly desires, which war against the soul,
having your⁺ conduct among the Gentiles good, so that wherein which they speak against you⁺ as evildoers, out of having witnessed the good works, they may glorify God in the day of visitation.
Be in subjection to every human creation because of the Lord, whether to the king as being supreme,
or to governors as being sent by him for punishment to evildoers and praise to doers of good,
because the will of God is this: doing good, to put to silence the ignorance of foolish men,
as free, and not having the freedom as a cover-up for evil, but as servants of God.
Honor everyone: love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.
Servants, be subject in all fear to [your] masters, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the crooked.
For this [is] grace, if because of conscience toward God, anyone bears up under griefs, suffering unjustly.
For what kind of renown [is it] if sinning and being battered, you⁺ shall endure? But if doing good and suffering, you⁺ shall endure, this [is] grace with God.
who Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that, having been dead to sins, we might live to righteousness, “by whose stripes you⁺ were healed.”
Likewise, wives, be subject to [your] own husbands, so that even if any are disobedient to the word, they will be won over without word by the conduct of the wives,
having witnessed your⁺ respectful, pure conduct,
whose adornment let not be the external, of braiding of hair and putting around of gold or putting on of garments,
but the hidden man of the heart, in the imperishable [quality] of the gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth before God.
as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, of whom you⁺ became children, doing good and not fearing [any] terror.
Husbands [do] likewise, dwelling with [them] according to knowledge, as with a weaker vessel, with the female, rendering honor as co-heirs also of the grace of life, in order for your⁺ prayers not to be hindered.
Now the end: All [be] single-minded, sympathetic, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, humble,
not giving back evil for evil or reviling for reviling; but on the contrary blessing, because to this you⁺ were called, so that you⁺ should inherit a blessing.
For, “The one wanting to love life and to see good days, let him stop the tongue from evil, and the lips not speak deceit.
And let him turn away from evil, and let him do good; let him seek peace and let him pursue it.
For the eyes of the Lord [are] on the righteous, and His ears toward their prayer. But the face of the Lord [is] on [those] doing evil.”
And who [is] the one who will do evil to you⁺ if you⁺ should be zealous for that which [is] good?
But in your⁺ hearts sanctify Christ [as] Lord, always ready for a defense to everyone who [is] asking you⁺ an account concerning the hope in you⁺, but with meekness and fear,
because Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, so that He might bring you⁺ to God, having been put to death indeed in the flesh, but having been made alive in the Spirit,
in whom also, having gone, He preached to the spirits in prison
which also corresponds to the baptism now saving you⁺, not a putting away of the filth of flesh, but the demand of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers having been subjected to Him.
Therefore, Christ having suffered in the flesh, you⁺ also arm yourselves with the same mind, because the one having suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
For the time past [is] sufficient to have carried out the intent of the Gentiles, having walked in debaucheries, lusts, drunkenness, orgies, carousings, and unlawful idolatries.
In this, they think it strange of you⁺ not running with [them] into the same overflow of dissipation, slandering,
before all things having fervent love among yourselves because love covers a multitude of sins,
just as each received a gift, ministering it to each other as good stewards of the manifold grace of God:
if anyone speaks, as oracles of God; if anyone ministers, as out of strength that God supplies, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is the glory and the power to the ages of the ages. Amen.
Beloved, do not think strange the fiery ordeal among you⁺ taking place for a trial to you⁺, as if a strange thing were happening to you⁺.
But as you⁺ share in the sufferings of Christ, rejoice, so that also in the revelation of His glory you⁺ may rejoice, exulting.
If you⁺ are reproached in the name of Christ, [you are] blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you⁺.
Shepherd the flock of God among you⁺, exercising oversight, not under compulsion but willingly according to God; and not for shameful gain but eagerly,
not as exercising lordship over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
And [on] the Chief Shepherd having been made manifest, you⁺ will receive the unfading crown of glory.
Likewise, younger ones, be subject to [your] elders. And all, gird on humility to one another, because, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you⁺ in due time,
having cast all your⁺ anxiety on Him, because with Him there is care about you⁺.
Be sober-minded; be alert. Your⁺ adversary the devil prowls around as a roaring lion seeking whom to swallow up,
whom you⁺ should resist, firm in the faith, knowing the same sufferings in your⁺ brotherhood to be experienced in the world.
And the God of all grace, the One having called you⁺ to His eternal glory in Christ, having suffered a little while, He Himself will complete, will confirm, will strengthen, [and] will establish [you].
